House Training The Happy Way!

Hi Everyone,

This weeks subject might be a scary one: House Training.

Sometimes house training us is pretty tough. It takes a lot of patience. But, if it's done right, both you and your pet will be really, really happy.

I'll try to explain from "our" point of view.

When we are about twelve weeks old, you can start house training. It's very important to keep to a schedule and take us outside often.

The best possible thing to do for us, is use positive reinforcement.  So every time we go potty, we get a treat and a lot of praise from you! That way we know we're doing the right thing.

Sometimes older dogs may not have been house trained when they were young. But, don't worry! Even older dogs can be taught.

For us smaller dogs, you may like us to be trained to go on a "Potty Pad".  That's fine with us!  As long as you use the same method of positive reinforcement and be patient. And of course, we still need to go outside for playtime and exercise.

Accidents do happen. And when they do, try to stop us in the act. Take us outside right away or to the Potty Pad. Then you can reward us for going the the right area!

If we do make a mistake, here at The Hospital, we have products that will help take our stains and odors.

Remember, that sometimes we won't always get it right, but we'll try our hardest for you. The more consistent and positive our training is, the faster we will learn. And then everyone will be happy!

And when we do a good job, don't forget about those treats!
