Keepin' Kitties Out Of The Christmas Tree!

If your cat is like my brother Simba, he LOVES the Christmas tree! And you really have to keep an eye on him. He moves really fast. Let's face it, he couldn't even hold still for this photo!

I don't blame him. It's really pretty, shiny and has tons of cool stuff dangling from it's branches. So of course, he's gonna try to climb it and play with all that stuff!

I'll never forget the year my Mom decorated the tree for hours, only to find it knocked over the next morning.

There was Simba, sitting next to the tree and clearly proud of himself. He told me thought he did an awesome job of "redecorating".

While it was kinda funny, at least to me and him, there was a serious side to it too. Did you know for instance that certain species of real trees are potentially poisonous to  cats?

This may be ingested through drinking the water we use to keep a tree fresh or by a needle from the tree causing a puncture wound – if you’ve ever stood on a pine needle you’ll already know how sharp they are. Ouch!

So here's some tips to keep everyone safe:

1. For real trees and artificial, wrap a good thick layer of tinfoil around the base of the tree and up to the first branches. Cats don’t like the feel of tinfoil (I don't know why) it will help to put them off climbing.

2. For those that make it past this though – it’s well worth investing in a sturdy tree base to reduce the instance of it toppling. And, If you can attach the tree to a wall as well, that will really help too!

3. By placing the tree away from ‘launching pads’ in the shape of shelves, sofas etc it will be less enticing to climb.

4. For the most determined Kitty, a water spray! A small, light spray accompanied by a firm no, should give them the idea.

5. Alternatively you can spray the tree with Bitter Apple. We actually sell that in our Pet Store. Cats hate that stuff! Just make sure you spray the tree BEFORE you put on your ornaments. It's much more effective that way.

6. You can also place pine cones around the bottom of the tree. Cats just don’t like walking on them, so the more the merrier. Just make sure if you have a dog, they can't pick up and eat the cones! That's a whole other problem...

7. Electric wires leading to the tree should be covered.  Cats will chew and play with these and that can be VERY dangerous! A simple thing to do is run the wires through used paper towel or wrapping paper tubes. You may need to save up to have enough, but its worth it!

8. And, of course, if you are buying your cat a present and it happens to contain catnip or any other cat desirable product, please don’t put it under the tree. I think you know what will happen...

A few more things:

  • Tinsel is sharp!  So keep it away from animals and children.
  • Spray snow is poisonous to cats.
  • Ribbons can choke.
  • Avoid sparkly, swinging, glass and candles if you can – these are all attractive to cats.
And last, but not least. To all the kitties out there, we only want you to stay safe....

Happy Holidays!

Thanksgiving Foods That are Bad for Pets!

 It's that time again!

Time to be tempted by all the yummy Thanksgiving treats. But, a lot of them are not safe!  So please have your Mom and Dad check out this list, so you can stay safe.

Foods that are bad for us:

1. Alcohol

This has the same effect on dogs’ livers and brains as on humans’, but it doesn’t take as much to cause serious damage and can even lead to respiratory distress, tremors, coma, and death.

2. Caffeine

Desserts and other Thanksgiving dishes may call for coffee, tea, or chocolate as an ingredient, but they all contain caffeine, which can actually be fatal to us.

                                        Holiday-Foods-that-are-bad-for-dogs-caffeine-coffee

3. Candy

While the sugar in candy isn’t great for dogs, the sweetener xylitol, which is often used nowadays, can actually lead to liver failure, so stay away from sweets of all kind!

4. Chocolate

In addition to caffeine, chocolate contains theobromine, which can be extremely poisonous when ingested by dogs and may even result in seizures and death, so be sure not to get into any chocolate!

5. Dairy foods

Milk, cream, cheese, and butter are bad for dogs. They can cause diarrhea and other digestive disturbances as well as allergic reactions in dogs, so leave the dairy-laden foods alone this holiday season.

6. Eggnog

Loaded with fat, sugar, milk, raw eggs and alcohol, this beverage is a quintuple whammy, none of which is good for you!.

                                     Holiday-Foods-that-are-bad-for-dogs-dairy-eggnog

7. Garlic, onions, and chives

This group of ingredients can be found in just about anything from mashed potatoes to stuffing. But in fresh, cooked, powdered, or any other form, it can lead to damaged blood cells and anemia—don’t risk it.

8. Ham and bacon

Don't let anyone offer you a scrap of ham or bacon!  Stop them in their tracks. Dishes that contain pork can cause pancreatitis, a potentially life-threatening disease, in dogs.

9. Nutmeg
In significant amounts, this spice can be toxic, causing hallucinations, stomach pain, and possibly even seizures.

10. Nuts

These have a very high fat content and may contain other toxins that can result in stomach upset or other serious health complications. Macadamia nuts, in particular, when eaten in even in small amounts, can be especially toxic and result in vomiting, tremors, paralysis, rapid heartbeat, and other complications.

11. Raisins and grapes

Consuming these fruits, even in small quantities, may cause rapid kidney failure in some dogs, and fruitcakes are one holiday offering likely to contain them. If you were thinking of taking a bite, don't!

12. Salt and sugar

Salt is in almost every Thanksgiving dish. And when consumed by dogs can cause excessive thirst, urination, or worse. It’s especially detrimental to dogs with underlying kidney or cardiovascular conditions. Meanwhile, the sugar found in most holiday desserts can fuel cavities, obesity, and even diabetes. It’s also bad for dogs with arthritis.

13. Turkey Bones

Bones can perforate the intestines, sometimes even requiring surgery. So don't even think about going near the trash or table!

So what Thanksgiving foods ARE good for us?

Cooked sweet potatoes (minus any additional ingredients), baked potatoes, pumpkin purée, cucumbers, carrots (steamed or raw), steamed green beans or greens, unsweetened cranberries, bananas, and apples are all good choices—and not just at
Thanksgiving. They are highly nutritious and will allow you to participate in the feast while remaining happy and healthy!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Splish, Splash, I Like Taking A Bath!

Hi Everyone,

Sometimes we get dirty. By playing, hanging out with friends, or even rolling around outside.

But, there's times when we have to get clean too.

So this week, I thought I'd talk about getting a bath.

When our Mom's and Dad's give us baths, we may think of it as not the funniest of times. You may even be afraid. But, don't be!

It's actually a really good time for them to check us for lumps and bumps that might be a problem. It's also a great chance to be checked for fleas and ticks.

So here's some tips you might want to tell your family about before they bathe you:

  • Before your bath, a good brushing really makes a difference. Any tangles or mats should be removed too.

  • Make sure a good quality shampoo is used. Not a shampoo for humans. This can cause you to be really itchy and even cause other problems.

  • Starting on your back, the shampoo should be applied and massaged in with water to create light suds. Make sure that the top of your head, under your neck, face and ear flaps are washed too. But, be careful that the suds don't get in your eyes.

  • After your shampoo, you need to be rinsed until the water runs clear. If you're being bathed in a medicated shampoo, it's important that the shampoo be left on for up to five minutes before rinsing. This really helps if you have skin problems.

  • Now it's time for a towel dry and most likely a good shake from you!  And if it's not too scary, a blow dryer can be used. But, set on the lowest temperature setting.

A bath not only makes you feel good, but it can become a special time shared with your family and even friends!

By now you should be feeling fresh, clean and hopefully relaxed! So snuggle up to your loved ones and in your cozy bed. And enjoy that wonderful clean feeling.

Unfortunately, if you're like me, it won't last long...

Don't Worry, Be Happy!

Sometimes I get nervous.

It usually happens when my Mom is away from me for more than a few hours.

The most common thing I do when my Mom is gone, is hide. In my mind an hour turns into days and I get pretty depressed.

I can also get upset when I'm chewing on a treat and one of the other doggies comes near me. I don't mean to, but I can get pretty nasty.

There's a lot of reasons to feel anxious or nervous. Such as:
  • Thunderstorms
  • Moving to a new home
  • Traveling
  • Fireworks
  • New people or a baby in the household
  • Being home alone
  • Riding in the car

Dogs show uneasiness through changes in behavior. Signs like excessive barking, chewing, licking, drooling and having accidents.

I've actually done some of these...

The good news is that there are ways to help ease our feelings of anxiety.

The first step in that your Mom or Dad notices that something isn't quite right.

Your families observations are very important to help your Doctor find the best treatment for you. And Zylkene, a medication that we have here at The Hospital, is one of the treatments our Doctors recommend.

Zylkene contains a natural product, derived from casein, a protein in milk well known to promote the relaxation of newborns after breastfeeding.

Zylkene is an all natural, non sedative supplement which reduces the signs of stress and helps restore balance and harmony in Cats and Dogs. With no known side effects.

So, if you're feeling down or maybe a bit nervous, have your Mom or Dad call the Hospital and talk to us. We'll help you figure out how to be your happy and non stressed self!

And who wants to go through life with a bunch of worries?

I sure don't,

Speck
